The SafePal S1 is a hardware wallet for cryptocurrencies. Unlike other manufacturers, it does not connect physically to another device (e.g., via USB) but instead pairs by scanning a QR code generated on the wallet itself. The company received investment from the crypto exchange Binance in 2018.

Our opinion

Zengo Logo
Zengo
Zengo takes a novel and exciting approach with its “Keyless Wallet.” The wallet focuses entirely on beginner-friendliness and usability. Common pain points like recovery phrases (seed phrases), backups, and verification processes are avoided through a hybrid solution: instead of a private key, two so-called “secret shares” are created. One remains on Zengo’s servers, and the other is stored on the user’s mobile device. Zengo cannot access these stored values but can still restore a backup if lost. Verification is done via biometric facial recognition. This solution represents a major leap forward in usability, making Zengo especially recommended for beginners. However, crypto purists who want full control over their private keys should opt for a different wallet. Otherwise, we recommend Zengo and align with the positive user reviews.

We consider the SafePal S1 to be a very cleverly designed hardware wallet. The device generates a unique QR code on its built-in screen, which can then be scanned by a smartphone using the accompanying software. According to the manufacturer, this offers a security advantage because, unlike other wallets, SafePal never physically connects to another device. We also really like the combination of tactile controls and a color display. SafePal definitely does things differently than its competitors and is a genuine alternative in this category. However, since trust, transparency, and open source are important criteria for us, we would lean towards the better-known competing products. For those who don’t prioritize these points, the SafePal S1 is a great choice—an excellent, high-quality wallet that scores well thanks to its affordable price and many comfort and security features.
