An open source wallet makes its software code publicly available (e.g., on GitHub). Either the entire codebase or significant parts of it are accessible. This has the advantage that many parties can review the code, enabling faster detection and fixing of security vulnerabilities or other weaknesses.

The anonymity of non-custodial wallets is generally relatively high. However, there are differences among providers regarding the collection and storage of user data. Even during the ordering process for hardware wallets, there can be variations in which user data is stored and for how long.

The so-called “Private Key” is a unique sequence of numbers and characters and serves as the private key that grants you direct access to and control over your cryptocurrencies. The private key is used to sign transactions. Simply put, it can be seen as a digital fingerprint that proves you are the owner of the cryptocurrencies. If you store your cryptocurrencies in so-called “custodial wallets” (e.g., crypto exchanges), you do not own your private keys.

The so-called “Secure Element” is a chip (microprocessor) that stores your private key and is separated from the rest of the hardware. This special chip provides the hardware wallet with significantly increased protection against local, physical attacks. Depending on the chip, different levels of security are offered. Some chips can be compromised with less effort, while others require specialized equipment and are extremely difficult to breach.

U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) is an open two-factor authentication standard that enables secure access to any number of web-based services using just one security key. The U2F specifications were developed by Google with the involvement of Yubico and NXP.

Some wallets offer an integrated trading feature within the wallet, allowing users to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly. Typically, this functionality is enabled through a connection to a crypto exchange’s web interface. The integrated trading feature in wallets offers significant advantages: cryptocurrencies can be purchased in the same place where they are stored. This eliminates the need to manually transfer cryptocurrencies from an exchange to your own wallet, saving both time and costs.

Staking means locking up cryptocurrency in a network for a set period to help validate transactions. In return, participants earn staking rewards, typically expressed as an annual percentage yield (APY). Staking is a feature of blockchains that use a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an additional security measure to enhance the protection of user accounts: besides the password, a second security component must be entered during login, such as a PIN code.

Multisignature wallets, or multisig wallets, require at least two private keys to authorize a transaction. This additional step significantly enhances security against unauthorized access, such as from personal threats. This security mechanism is especially useful for safeguarding large amounts of assets.

If your hardware wallet or device with the corresponding software wallet is lost or damaged, there is no need to panic. As long as you have your private key or recovery seed (also called “seed phrase”), you can restore your wallet at any time. The recovery seed is a combination of 12-24 words and is the most common backup method for wallets. Important: Keep your recovery words and private keys secret and never share them with anyone!
