Ethereum
 (ETH)

Ethereum is the leading platform for decentralized applications and DeFi. At its core is the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which enables so-called smart contracts to run automatically without any central authority. Transactions are validated in a decentralized way by a global network of validators.

Sonic, formerly known as Fantom (FTM), is a new Layer-1 blockchain designed with a strong focus on developer needs. With speeds of up to 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) and sub-second finality, applications can run quickly and securely. A native bridge to Ethereum and a monetization model called “Fee Monetization” allow developers to earn up to 90% of the transaction fees generated by their applications.

Our opinion

Ethereum Logo
Ethereum
 (ETH)
From our perspective, Ethereum was the key breakthrough that brought programmable blockchains to life. It was the first platform to introduce smart contracts, laying the foundation for decentralized apps (dApps), DeFi, and NFTs. Unlike Bitcoin, we don’t see Ether (ETH) as just a currency but rather as the fuel powering a decentralized world computer. To this day, Ethereum benefits from its first-mover advantage and has built a strong ecosystem of developers, applications, and users. While high transaction fees and scalability remain a challenge, the successful transition to Proof of Stake (The Merge on September 15, 2022) marked a major step forward. In our view, Ethereum remains the leading smart contract platform — which is why, alongside Bitcoin, it represents the second-largest position in our crypto portfolio.

Sonic (Fantom) Logo
Sonic (Fantom)
 (S)
Sonic (formerly Fantom) builds on the Fantom ecosystem and introduces new strengths with sub-second transaction finality, up to 10,000 TPS, and a strong developer focus. Its fee monetization model, which allocates up to 90% of collected fees to developers, could foster a vibrant app ecosystem rapidly. The 1:1 swap from FTM to S-Tokens facilitates migration for the existing community but also brings potential uncertainties and some fragmentation during this phase. The extensive airdrop program with 190.5 million S-Tokens aims to accelerate user acquisition but may cause short-term volatility and speculative trading. The Sonic Gateway, a native bridge to Ethereum, promises greater security and speed than typical cross-chain solutions but still needs to prove itself in real-world usage. While Fantom has demonstrated strong performance and high total value locked, it remains uncertain if Sonic can sustain the same reliability and security that established networks have shown over years. Overall, Sonic shows significant potential to continue and expand Fantom’s success story. Whether its mix of advanced technology, innovative incentives, and seamless migration will hold up long-term is yet to be determined in practice.
